Project Overview and Scope

Conceptual and Detail Design:

The initial scope of the project entailed the conceptual and detail design for both control rooms. Taking into consideration the very confined space available, an initial 2D concept was developed and presented to the client based on their initial brief.

Ilitha worked closely with The Client to engineer a solution that fulfilled both the deliverable expectations and the budgetary constraints. The final complete “Approved for Construction” package was issued to the client for tender purposes.

Supply & Installation:

Ilitha, through its competitive bid, succeeded in winning the tender for the execution of the procurement and construction phase.

Project Details

The Ilitha project brief was to create two new modern, aesthetically pleasing control rooms, within the functional environment of a diamond mining vessel.

Control Room finishes:

In order to create a pleasant, quieter and warmer atmosphere and enhance the spatial feel within the console room, various devices were employed. Formica-covered marine ply panelling with thermal and acoustic foam installed behind the panelling, along with a bit mastic floor screed to enhance the thermal properties and negate a lot of the shipboard noise. To further enhance the visual and acoustic environment, leather finish interlocking rubber matting was installed.

Concealed lighting mounted in dropped ceilings allowed the operations staff a more selective control over lighting levels. Cork boards and white boards were also installed to serve the needs of on board communications.


New ergonomically designed, powder coated operator consoles, finished in hard wearing stain resistant corian were installed in both control rooms.  An innovative monitor bracket was designed and manufactured in stainless steel to meet the need for multiple computer monitors at the consoles.


A small kitchen with dining nook, kitchen units, personal food lockers, instant water heater, fridge, sink and under counter water chiller was installed.

Air conditioning:

A split air conditioning unit was installed in the Plant Control Room.

Project Conclusion

The control rooms were installed under very difficult on-board conditions to comply with the initial brief of the project, creating a modern, functional environment conducive to increased productivity and operational alertness on a 24 hour basis and within budgetary constraints.  In addition, it is believed that a sense of operational pride and ownership has been reinforced amongst the personnel.
